Herbal Remedies for Depression
Tags: depression
Herbal remedies and medicinal plants have been used for thousands of years to treat a wide variety of illnesses and conditions. The following is a list of herbal remedies that have been recommended for relieving the symptoms of depression.
Although used around the world, these herbs have not been widely studied by the medical community. Even St. John’s Wort, which has been studied fairly extensively in Europe, has not been accepted by the National Institute of Mental Health. “Natural” substances, such as herbs, can have negative side effects, could interact with your current medications, or could otherwise be dangerous. Also, using herbal remedies to the exclusion of medical treatment for depression is not advised. Before using any herbal remedy, contact your physician to discuss the potential benefits or adverse effects.
St. John’s Wort

In numerous studies in Europe, St. John’s Wort has been shown to reduce symptoms in people with mild-to-moderate depression. The National Institute of Mental Health, in cooperation with the NIH Office of Alternative Medicine and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, is now conducting a large-scale study of the herb and how it relates to the treatment of depression.
