Erectile Dysfunction

Tags:

Erectile dysfunction (ED), the inability to sustain an erection sufficient for intercourse more than 25% of the time, is neither an uncommon problem nor one about which you need to be ashamed. ED reportedly affects from 10 to 30 million in the United States alone. The good news is that over 80% of ED cases are caused by a physical event such as disease, injury, or side effects of certain drugs, and in 95% of cases, it can be treated successfully. Some of the most common diseases affecting blood flow to the penis include heart disease, hardening of the arteries, and high blood pressure. Other diseases that contribute to ED are diabetes, chronic alcoholism, liver failure, and elevated cholesterol levels. And for those of you who smoke, keep in mind that smoking causes damage to blood vessels, which interferes with blood flow to the penis. Smoking is considered to be the biggest contributing factor in ED. Drugs such as antidepressants, cocaine, marijuana, antifungals, beta-blockers, and some high blood pressure medications may also cause ED.

Talk to your doctor

Your doctor will be sympathetic when discussing ED problems. Remember, there are very effective treatments available, and your doctor will have already spoken to many others with the same problem. It might make it easier for you to prepare a list of questions you can present to your doctor:

  • What treatment options are available? Which one is best for me?
  • How long will the treatment take before I can achieve an erection?
  • Will my erection be the same as before the erectile dysfunction began?
  • Are there any restrictions for my partner or myself?
  • What are the side effects?
  • How effective is the treatment?
  • How often can drug treatments be used?
  • How much does it cost and will it be covered by my insurance?
  • Are follow-up visits required? If so, how often
