Fact or Myth: The Truths about Arthritis
Tags: arthritis
Myth: Once you have arthritis, you have it forever. There is really nothing you can do but grin and bear it.
Fact: There is a lot you can do to reduce the physical symptoms of arthritis and the likelihood that you will experience significant physical disability. A study conducted by the Stanford Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease Center showed that patients who were educated about how to manage their arthritis experienced increased self-confidence and demonstrated changes in their health behaviors, which led to improved outcomes and decreased pain. Early diagnosis and prompt medical and lifestyle intervention can result in better controlled arthritis.
Myth: If you have arthritis, exercise is bad for your joints.
Fact: Physical activity is an important part of any arthritis management program. Prolonged inactivity can actually make arthritis symptoms worse. Studies have shown that those who engage in moderate exercise show significant improvements in their aerobic capacity, endurance, strength, experience of pain, and flexibility. All of these benefits can be achieved without causing arthritis flare-ups.
Myth: Cold, wet weather causes arthritis.
Fact: The weather has no connection to the development of arthritis. However, those who already have arthritis may feel better in a warmer, dryer climate, due to the soothing effect of warmth on sore joints. As well, those who experience an improvement in arthritic symptoms in a warmer climate may be experiencing the effect of increased activity, which is more likely in good weather.
Myth: Certain dietary changes and supplements can cure arthritis.
Fact: There is currently no known cure for arthritis. Dietary changes and supplements may have an effect on the symptoms associated with arthritis, but they are not a cure. However, if you have arthritis, do not be discouraged. Medical advances and lifestyle changes can have a significant effect on the severity of symptoms and the degree of disability that you experience.
